“Born This Way” Book Review by Adam Wyatt

February 25, 2019 • Adam Wyatt

In a day where truth is subjective and, according to some, irrelevant, pastors need to be equipped to challenge mainstream ideas and thoughts on a variety of current issues.  One of the most troubling cultural issues today is the issue of homosexuality.  While many of our readers are in the South and think that homosexuality is something that they will not need to address, I think that pastors need to be versed enough in Scripture to deal with the issues.  Further, I think that pastors need some practical resources in which to deal with them.

That being said, I want to encourage a book that deals with these topics in a biblical and helpful way.  Born This Way: Homosexuality, Science, & the Scriptures by Dr. Alan Branch(Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is an incredibly helpful book that deals with the contemporary issues and talking points of the homosexual agenda and deals with them in a way that is both knowledgeable and full of wisdom.

Dr. Branch states, “while there are genetic and biological factors that correlate with a higher incidence of same-sex attraction and homosexual behavior, as of yet there is no proof of genetic or biological causation for homosexuality” (pg. 2).  Branch looks at various research in a clear, succinct, and fair way letting the research speak for itself while allowing the reader to make clear pastoral applications.

This book, while full of research, is readable and accessible and will serve the local pastor well as they seek to better informed on the issues surrounding homosexuality.  I encourage every pastor to read this book and keep it close because the days are coming, no matter where you serve, when you will need to be able to speak clearly on this issue in your local church.

[Dr. Branch is also about to publish a similar book on transsexuality.  The date is forthcoming]
